Key Skills from Swan Training Group

Improve your Maths, English and communication skills

What are Key Skills?

Key skills are those generic skills which everyone needs to be a fully rounded and well educated person, regardless of your academic subject.

They include Written, Oral and Visual Communication Skills, Information Skills, Working with Others, IT Skills, Working with Numbers, Solving Problems and Improving your own Learning and Performance.

Why do I need Key Skills?

They allow you to gain more from your academic studies by helping you to manage your workload better and by encouraging you to reflect on your learning and the ways you gather and manage information.

Key Skills - as generic skills - will be needed in any of your future employment in addition to your specialist knowledge. By developing these skills now, you can help make the transition to from one job to another run as smoothly as possible.

Swan teaches 3 different key skills:

  • Communication
  • Application of Number
  • Information and Communication Technology.

Key skills qualifications can be achieved separately, although will more often be embedded as part of the qualification you are already undergoing. The work towards your Key Skills qualification is taken from your current course which means no extra work is necessary.

They are all available as qualifications at levels 1 to 4 of the National Qualifications Framework. That means that Level 1 is roughly the same level as GCSE grade D to G or QCF Level 1, Level 2 is about the level of GCSE A* to C or QCF Level 2 and Level 3 is about the same level as AS/A level or QCF Level 3
